Restoration Update: Communion Table
Several years ago, the Church contracted with Jeff Weatherford to repair and restore all pews in the church. He did a wonderful job. When some 16 of these pews and other church furniture pieces were damaged when the sanctuary truss failed, I contacted Jeff once again to see if he was able and available to restore them to their natural beauty. We are indeed fortunate that he accepted the job!
One of the first tasks was to repair the communion table. All four legs to the table were broken away from the top, although it appears that the repairs will not be terribly difficult. When Jeff started the repairs, he contacted me about an inscription he found on the bottom of the tabletop, which I thought you would find interesting.
It reads: (Typed)-First Presbyterian Church
Adrian, Michigan
Edward A. Krapp, Minister
(Written) This table was presented to the church by Mrs Emma L. Bixby and used for the first time at the communion service December 1, 1907.
Yes- this is the same Emma L. Bixby, whose husband, William K. Bixby, donated $25,000 in her name to establish Bixby Hospital.
Indeed, this table represents just a small piece of the rich and fascinating history of our church!
