Update on ceiling collapse
On June 21, a massive support beam in the ceiling of the church sanctuary failed, causing about 40 percent of the ceiling to collapse. The falling debris caused significant damage to pews, historic furnishings and the chancel itself. Thankfully, no one was present at the time of the collapse, so there were no injuries.
After the collapse, the structure was stabilized, and supporting scaffolding was erected which fills the entire sanctuary. The remainder of the original ceiling has also been removed to allow for a thorough inspection of the entire framework of the sanctuary. This stabilizing work was completed in mid-October, allowing us to return to our fellowship hall, where we are currently holding worship services each Sunday.
A structural engineer has inspected the space and has specified needed repairs. At a minimum, the following will be needed: a 47 foot replacement beam (recently installed); reinforcement of all other trusses; painting; carpeting; pews and historic furnishing repairs; electric upgrades; light fixture repairs; HVAC repairs and new insulation.
After months of negotiations, insurance proceeds will now be available for repairs and damages caused by the collapse. These proceeds, however, will not cover costs to inspect and repair other trusses and support members above the ceiling, as well as bell tower repairs. These costs are expected to be in excess of $100,000.
We have heard from many in the community about our catastrophe and so many have asked how they can help. Above all, we ask for your prayers. In addition, while we recognize the church is the people and not the building, our goal is to preserve our historic church structure and sanctuary to be a home for worship for future generations.
